Shutting the Mouths of the Self-Righteous (Romans 3:9-20)
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.” “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,” “THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”; “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”; “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE HAVE THEY NOT KNOWN.” “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.” Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

Paul declares in Romans 1:18-32 God’s condemnation of all mankind. This condemnation is based upon man’s rejection of God’s self-revelation through creation. Enthusiastically, the self-righteous Jews accept Paul’s words as an indictment of the Gentiles, failing to recognize they too are condemned. In chapter 2 Paul pointedly turns to the Jews, condemning them on the basis of their hypocrisy. They neither live in accordance with the standard by which they judge others guilty nor in accordance with what they teach. Paul presses on in chapter 3 to show the sinfulness of these self-righteous Jews as they justify their own sin, while questioning God’s justice for judging them. In this concluding section of Romans 3:9-20, Paul seeks to silence once and for all the self-righteous Jews. He does this by proving from the Old Testament Scriptures that Jews and Gentiles alike are under sin and worthy of divine judgment. Comparing themselves with others is certainly no basis for their own justification. He reminds the Jews of the function of the Law in their lives: the Law was not given to make them righteous; it was given to show them their unrighteousness.

The "what then," are we better than they?" Who are "they?" Righteousness is neither particular to Jews or Greeks, righteousness is in all of us as other human frailties, God knows who we are and if you walk with God, read Jesus words in the Sermon on the Mount and The Beatitudes.

Proverbs 29:27---The unjust are an abomination to the righteous, but the upright are an abomination to the wicked.

What is today, is not what was during Biblical times. There is no human being without sin, it is our nature. No one actually is capable of judging righteousness, but one...And He is not a member of this board!

are you SURE????
"And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.” Gen 7:1
"And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.” - Lk 1:6
And [God] delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.” - 2Peter2:7-8
Bears thread title is "No one is righteous." I think we all can have moments of righteousness but I don't see how a human can live an entire life of righteousness. Right off the bat the Bible has two characters one not righteous at all, brother killing brother, that was not a good start.

Human nature is not a quality that can lead to righteousness. But, I suppose it may be possible for someone to be considered righteous. The point is, what we deem righteous is not necessarily the same thing God deems righteous. We are not worthy of making that decision, and should not deem ourselves so.

Not in the least. Scripture tells us that our righteousness "is as filthy rags..."

The Biblical times are not today. People lived hundreds of years then, we do not. Jesus lived during that time and was followed by the disciples and other holy men. Comparing today with those times is your issue. There is no comparison. The meaning of that verse is explained here.... www.gotquestions.org/filthy-rags.html

Sorry, I will take the Bibles word over yours... And my mentioning the longer lives had nothing to do with giving you more time to sin, but to show you that things now are not as they were during Biblical times. As far as my post being ill-informed....when you first mentioned that Jesus may or may not have existed...you lost all of my interest and credibility. So, you can just pass my post by and forget about commenting on them...Your opinion is less than even interesting to me!

Well, perhaps you should clarify your meaning when you post it, not afterward. BTW...I was recognized for getting the most out of what I read in high school and college, by reading the fastest and comprehending what I read..so put blame on the writer, not the reader when it is not clear what you wrote. Just because you know what you meant, does not mean your words portray what you meant!
You are much too literal ...Biblical times were during the writing of the Bible, and the times they were writing about. So your blather is really nonsensical. Comparing Biblical times and today is the point, not the year, the events of the Bible or even people ages.
That is one time, and this is another...stop trying so hard to contradict everything said and just take it as it is said. Sometimes we even outsmart ourselves when trying too hard.
