The Ironies of Illegal Immigration By Victor Davis Hanson
Mexico does not explain why its citizens wish to leave their birth country — or why they are eager to enter a country ridiculed by the Mexican press and government. Estimates suggest that there are eleven million to 13 million Mexican citizens currently living in the United States illegally. Millions more emigrated previously and are now U.S. citizens.
A recent poll revealed that one-third of Mexicans (34 percent) would like to emigrate to the United States. With Mexico having a population of about 130 million, that amounts to some 44 million would-be immigrants.
Such massive potential emigration into the United States makes no sense.
First, Mexico is a naturally rich country. It ranks 19th in the world in proven oil reserves and is currently the twelfth-largest oil producer. Mexico certainly has significantly more natural advantages than do far wealthier per capita Singapore, Taiwan, or Chile.
Mexico also is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and earns billions in foreign exchange from visitors. It enjoys a temperate climate, is rich in minerals, and has millions of acres of fertile farmland and a long coastline.
In addition to being strategically located as a bridge between North America and South America, Mexico has ports on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
It is not an overcrowded country: Mexico ranks in the lower half of the world in population density. Too many people and too little land are certainly not the reasons why millions of Mexicans either emigrate or wish to emigrate to the United States. Second, popular progressive narratives in both Mexico and the United States cite America for all sorts of pathologies, past and present. The United States is often damned for prior colonialism and imperialism, as well as current racism and xenophobia.
Why, then, would millions of people south of the border leave their own homeland and potentially risk their lives to encounter a strange culture and language, to live in such a purportedly inhospitable place, and to adopt to an antithetical system based on supposedly toxic European and Protestant traditions?

Some of you have to pay federal income taxes on your Social Security benefits. ... between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits. more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable.

I hate tax season. I have had to send the government a check to make up the difference every year since I retired eight years ago.

To address why they come, first this is not a Protestant country, Catholics have been accepted for quite a long time. The poor and uneducated come over the border, 1/3 of immigrants. The rest get here by air with visa and overstay. I read 15% are in white collar jobs, others join family members in a small business or even have a union paying job as in the beef/pork industry. I have crisscrossed much of Mexico in villages, they don't have a clue, all they know is American dream, I think those are the persons the last few years that have turned around and gone home without being deported. To tell you how little they know, who is Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, no clue.

This is a Christian nation...
And we don't need people that couldn't make a living in their own country, because they won't do it here either. Illegals are not workers, or they are those that want something for nothing and expect it here. Who needs more uneducated, dependents to support in this country...we have too many of our own. We don't owe these people one thing, when we can't even support our own veterans, homeless and elderly. GO HOME !!!

We should give no foreign aid to any nation until there are no hungry/homeless people in our own country. Build the wall. Stop illegal entry to our country. Evict those who have over stayed their visa, Say no to DACA. Always put the USA first.

When a majority of people in a nation are Christian, it is a Christian nation...whether legally declared on or not. I do realize that Jews are not Christians...do you think I live in a cave? news.gallup.com/poll/224642/2017-update-americans-religion.aspxProtestants continue to make up the largest religious group in America, totaling 49% of U.S. adults
(so we are a protestant country)
interviewed as part of Gallup's Daily tracking in 2017. Catholics are the next-largest group, at 23% of the population, with Mormons accounting for about 2%. This means that about three-quarters of Americans, overall, identify with the Christian faith.
(so we are a Christian nation)
