It is my opinion that Baptism is a witness to others that we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior. We are baptized in obedience to God. Baptism is not a prerequisite to salvation, rather it is an act to honor our Savior.

i have concluded in my studies that the key to the jesus ministry was the relationship between he and john. esoterically, the premise was and still is that man has a spritual death, and as we were born by our mothers who nourished us with the living waters inside them, so can all men be reborn via the living waters act of baptism.

That was totally uncalled, Katie. I thought better of you than this implies.

Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
I disagree Bear, I believe this verse verifies that Baptism is a requirement to be saved. To answer the thread question, what would be the purpose of Baptism, if it were not for man. Baptism was created for man. To clarify the second part of the verse, one has to believe before Baptism, thus making believing the first step of two to be saved. Without believing, there is no point or reason to be baptised. Thus making the second step dependent on the first.

Here is what I believe as a Southern Baptist... The Romans Road Verses We are all sinners (Rom. 3:10,23). The wages of our sins is death (Rom. 6:23). Jesus paid our sin debt on the cross (Rom. 5:8). Salvation comes by faith, that is, by confessing with our mouths and believing in our hearts (Rom. 10:9,10). Call on the Lord for salvation and get saved (Rom. 10:13). When you find a verse that says baptism is not needed to be saved, let me know...Until then, I will stick to my guns on this one.

Here is another look at baptism/salvation, Pickle. If you will recall the crucifixion of Christ when the thief next to him asked that Christ Remember him in his Kingdom, Christ told him that today you shall be with me in paradise, there was no baptism needed for the thief. If there was no need for baptism for the thief to be saved why would there be need for us to be baptized to be saved also?

Well, Bear, I would consider that a very special event and not at all what we are commanded to do for salvation. I just don't think that stands to reason to be what is expected from the rest of us...but, that's my opinion.

Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is LORD," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
There are many more if you will look with an open mind.
